Donald Trump was partying in style at Mar-a-Lago in Florida the very night food assistance expired for one in eight Americans. On the same day that 42 million people were facing financial hardship, with a government shutdown leading to food bank lines of thousands upon thousands of public employees, Donald Trump was hosting a gala dinner with his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, complete with dancers, live music, and every imaginable luxury.

The theme of the party, according to the White House, was " A Little Party Never Killed Nobody", a song that is part of the soundtrack of The Great Gatsby.

The party, on Friday night, the eve of the SNAP food program’s expiration due to lack of federal funding, saw Trump in the midst of a celebration with guests dressed in 1920s attire at elegantly decorated tables while a band played live.

At the president’s table, in addition to Rubio and his wife, were his daughters Tiffany Trump and her husband, and Ivanka and Jared Kushner.

Approximately one in eight people in the United States relies on the food assistance program, which provides an average of $190 per person. This program had already suffered a significant cut of $186 million with Trump’s sweeping economic bill passed in July.
