This is truly great news! I recently migrated my email and calendar from Google to Proton but decided that Drive is useless for me without photo backup on mobile. Linux client with sync is also extremely important but AFAIK Proton Drive is supported by Celeste so this might be a viable workaround (though I didn’t test it yet).
I also want to point out that during the short period of time when I’m using Proton Mail and Calendar, they already received a few new features. If they can keep up with this pace of development then I’m honestly fine with paying for incomplete services just to support them.
I really hope Proton will become a one stop shop for secure online services. Fingers crossed!
Finally! Drive might be useful!

You need to add the beta from playstore
I’ve been thinking of a solution to this for a while now but the problem persists. I’d love to not have to indefinitely increase my Google drive storage, and in fact I have a home server with terabytes of free space on it where my and my wife’s photos get automatically backed up. The problem though is that they’re so much more usable and accessible in Google Photos. We have shared albums with our friends and family of our kid, of vacations and events. If I don’t remember when that funny picture of a duck was taken I can search “duck” or see a heat map of my photo library.
The same problem is true with Proton Drive. I mean, I did just set up photo backup because why not, I have the space. But once they’re there what good are they if I can’t find them, organize them, share them?
Immich is basically a g photos clone I’ve been meaning to try out
I just set up Immich on my home server this morning, it’s awesome! And then Proton announces photos this afternoon. 😅
I have Immich. I’ve even spent countless hours getting my nas folder structure imported without destroying the originals. I’ll be using both now. Not a waste by any means I must stress.
Although, proton says it can’t find my camera folder so isn’t working for me yet.
Try ente.io out. It’s much closer to the Google Photos experience.
Magic search released, face ML is coming soon, and shared collaborative albums are already a feature.
Synology Photos (what I use) does all of that. The problem is for search and face match it’s nowhere near as good as Google and for sharing, I’d have to ask people to install a new app and set up an account, but they all already have Google accounts
I’d have to ask people to install a new app and set up an account, but they all already have Google account
If you’re not willing to take that minor trouble, no one will be able to help you. Sounds like an excuse to use Google rather than an actual good reason.
If you’ve ever asked your aunt or grandmother to install an unfamiliar app and make a new account for it, you’d know this isn’t minor trouble.
These sort of people must not have family or friends. They obviously don’t interact with them much if they just expect them to download and set up something at the drop of a hat.
I have asked them, they said no.
What do I do now, force them at gun point?
You can share them by right clicking and creating a link. And they are working on organization next.
I just use Syncthing to send my photos to my desktop at home. Automatically, instantly.
Specifically Syncthing-Fork, it moves all sync conditions into each sync job. https://github.com/Catfriend1/syncthing-android
There are clients for every OS. SyncTrayzor for Windows, Syncthing for Linux, Möbius for iOS.
This is not a solution to my problem. Read what I wrote.
Uh, I did. Please enlighten me how anything in your post could nit be addressed by this.
If you’re literally just sync thinging pictures to a remote computer, how do you share albums with your friends and family, search for that photo of a duck, or see a heat map of where you took them?
I listed each of those examples.
Just tried it, it only backs up Camera photos. If one uses a third-party app to take pictures then Drive doesn’t pick them up (on Android at least)
If you have the path set to DCIM/Camera then it works.
What if you move the photos into the DCIM/Camera folder?
Then it works. They just don’t let you manually select the folder. Has to be DCIM/Camera
What if one has a stupid Sony phone with stupid “Photography Pro” camera app, that doesn’t let you change the download path? Any tips?
Ahh 2 of us already. Wtf are proton doing?
Seriously it’s android. We have loads of weird and whacky photo dirs.
Get Foldersync.
It can automatically move the files there for you, instantly, or on a schedule.
That app has been for years a lifesaver for me to put files where I want them.
Thanks for the suggestion, but sadly that app is listed to have ads and it’s not open-source either, so for me personally that won’t work.
However, I was recommended an app called Media Merger on F-droid, worked flawlessly for me!
Can you elaborate on “third party?” To me, that means not the system app, but a user installed one. I’ve used my system camera (app.grapheneos.camera) and one not originally part of my OS (user app) that I’ve installed from the Play Store (com.google.android.GoogleCamera) and they both backed up automatically.
Hell yeah, it’s been almost a week since my last full screen ad when I check my email. I’m looking forward to this one.
In the latest version you can select which folders to sync!
Very nice!
I wonder if it works with FolderSync. Be neat if it did ❤️
I use FolderSync to move from /Pictures/Screenshots and other to /DCIM/Camera so they autoupload. Just works so far, apparently.
Hmm, that’s clever 😎. I dig it.
No need anymore, you can now choose which folders to sync. Awesome.

Its default only on WiFi. You cant even make it sync over Mobile Data. What do you mean.
This is good if true. I had it going and it kept the background notification while on mobile data.
Edit- yesterday, without any Wifi connected, it showed as still backing up. Today while I was out it showed “paused til connected to Wi-Fi” so…I guess it should be only over wifi? Going to keep monitoring it as it is taking a while.
I exclusively use it through WiFi

Any way to backup the photo without using the WiFi connection ?
Sadly I also didn’t find a way.
How do I set my camera to always post pictures taken in “DCIM/Camera/” ? My built in camera app saves it to a different folder name 🙃 Edit : My camera app doesn’t seem to let me choose the download path, what now…
