Not to disparage the very real mental pain and anguish suffered by “Nazis who shoot up a Walmart”, but I think the difference between them and a mother of a non-verbal adult who needs 24/7 care is that the mother’s pain is more real. It is distilled from material conditions. She should not have to burden that pain, but the systems around her do not allow relief.
A young white man shooting up a Walmart is in pain. It’s just their pain is likely rooted in a sense of entitlement. He’s suffering because he believes others ought to be suffering more than him.
A lot has been theorized on what fundamentally distinguishes someone from being left or right leaning. I subscribe to the belief that, in general, people of the left experience empathy much differently than those on the right.
