SAN FRANCISCO/NEW DELHI/SEOUL April 18 (Reuters) - Tesla’s long-awaited plans for an affordable car include a U.S-made, stripped-down version of its best-selling electric SUV, the Model Y, but the production launch has been delayed, three sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

Tesla (TSLA.O) has promised affordable vehicles beginning in the first half of the year, providing a potential boost to flagging sales. Global production of the lower-cost Model Y, internally codenamed E41, is expected to begin in the United States, the sources said. That would occur at least a few months later than outlined in Tesla’s public plan, they added, offering a range of revised targets from the third quarter to early next year.

While Tesla is now and forever dead to me. I would love an EV without the surveilance, self steering, self braking etc…

I want an EV that only I control, not run by some fascists software updates. Autodrive isn’t something that frees you from the burden of driving, its control over where when and how you go anywhere. Its control marketed as convenience.

Give me the dumbest EV possible. It should also be cheaper to produce.

Stripped down? The Y is a stripped down X and it’s an overpriced piece of junk. Long Awaited? Get fucked. I’m long awaiting this company burning to the ground and it’s CEO imprisoned.

Correct, Y and 3 and S and X share a platform, battery pack, and a few other things.

Hopefully he’s “imprisoned” in the building while it burns down.

Not really, they’re a totally different platform with very little parts commonality. They don’t even use the same battery cells.

The EV maker on Jan. 2 reported its first decline in annual deliveries last year, and analysts expect sales to fall again this year for several reasons, including damage to the brand reputation by Chief Executive Elon Musk’s close work with U.S. President Donald Trump and support of far-right European politicians.

    https://electrek.co/2025/03/28/most-americans-would-not-consider-buying-tesla-new-poll/

A new poll shows that 67% of Americans would not consider buying or leasing a Tesla vehicle – with most of them citing Elon Musk as the reason why.

The results from this survey clearly point toward Tesla having an Elon Musk problem.

If he were removed from the equation, Tesla would have much better chances in the US market.

If Musk is removed AND major changes are made to the brand then Tesla might have a long term chance in the US market.

I bought a Tesla before the Musk craziness was in full display, and I can honestly say I wouldn’t buy another one (or recommend them to others) unless they seriously redesigned the physical controls, and focused more on truly useful software features. Not just games, “fart mode”, and a full self driving system that’s been promised for a decade now…

Yeah, it’s unfortunate. I bought mine when we could still ignore the red flags and it’s still my favorite car feature wise, there are still so many things it does better than any car, still so many features not available on other vehicles for any price. The comparisons with Apple are apt - I could have been a lifelong customer. But wtf mental illness happened here? For the first time ever I’m embarrassed by what I drive. I don’t know what I’ll do next time I need a car, but it won’t be a Tesla without radical changes in leadership - and that Nazi is only the start. Every board member and executive who thinks that’s ok has to go

There are already a growing number of EV alternatives. I will definitely be looking at all of them a few years down the line when I decide to get rid of my Tesla.

A lot of choices don’t seem to be available in the US - Hyundai/kia seems best of what else is available in a lot of ways. I originally hoped the legacy American manufacturers were getting their shit together but it looks like they’re crawling back under their rocks.

I guess my biggest hope is that Lucid or Rivian are able to break out into mass production of their next generation

And it will run perfectly fine on ten year old computer hardware using nothing but cameras in any manner of weather.
