I really don’t get these posts common on Lemmy. How common is this? Where did the high socks Linux joke come from?

I spent a solid minute trying to figure out why the second step ladder looked fucked up.

    I am not very perceptive.

This joke is sadly becoming a common perception. Lots of furries and femboys ruining the perception of FOSS and cybersec because they feel the need to push their lifestyle into total synthesis with their career and other hobbies.

I just hope that if Linux ever becomes mainstream or close to it, us reasonable users won’t get clumped in with either community.

Bold of you to assume that Linux is not mainstream. Most servers run Linux, most phones run Linux, it’s only your work PC that still runs Windows, and it increasingly becomes an isolated bubble of old white corporate dudes who keep buying Windows PCs because that’s what they used for twenty years to run their spreadsheets.

The FOSS community doesn’t need this kind of mentality. “Us reasonable users” really tells what you think about people with different lifestyles to your own. Quit being weird and fracturing the FOSS community. The Corpos don’t need the help

      us reasonable users

If anything, it is hate and prejudice that’s ruining the image of FOSS. If you don’t have the mental composure and maturity to at the very least ignore the people you disagree with, you can hardly call yourself “reasonable”.

It’s pretty hard to ignore a subculture that does nothing but shove their lifestyle in everyone’s face, screaming “LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME!” and then cries about “hate and prejudice” when people express that they’re sick of it.

You’re doing the exact same thing with this public crashout about how much their happiness offends you. You’re spreading your vitriol because you want people to take your side. I’d rather surround myself with furries and femboys than the likes of you.

Queer and nonconforming people exist, they have the same right to express themselves as everyone else, and you’d better get used to it real quick.

You can express that you are sick of their showcase of their lifestyle just as much as they can showcase them. However, saying that the entire subculture is nothing but shoving their lifestyle at everyone’s face is neither cool nor is it largely the truth. Sure, maybe some of them are annoying, but that’s not the basis to dismiss the entire subculture.

You’re not better anyone for not wearing the cute socks bozo. Linux femboys and furries are smart people who are probably more accepting and “reasonable” than you are

Free as in freedom, not only free as in beer. That is how FOSS works. Also one of the things I find appealing about it.

By focusing on FOSS being this super serious thing, we kinda lose what is great about it. Everyone is welcome and free to use it as they see fit. That is by design (see licenses). A lot of FOSS is passion projects by people on their spare time, they do it because it is fun / fulfilling. We need all hands on deck, and FOSS should also be playful, experimental, and novel. FOSS is this super idealistic gift to humanity, from humanity. Every piece of FOSS software contributes to the collective human database of ideas and software.

The “us reasonable users” is a really unfortunate way of sharing your opinion on this matter. Is it unreasonable to be a femboy and use FOSS/Linux? By being elitist like this, I kinda get the same reaction you claim to get from this user. I don’t want to be clumped in with the users that feel they are superior to everyone else and acting like it, and gatekeeping the FOSS community and its representation.
