    Landlords suck of course, but real question: could the paint have acted as a kind of preservative for the wood and metal beneath?

      If it was quality paint, perhaps. But you know a landlord is gonna go for the cheapest shit that’ll streak and run and chip like crazy leaving it an ugly mess that doesn’t protect anything.
