If you are affected by the shutting down of lemm.ee and understand that admins and mods need direct support in order to keep things running smoothly, consider joining communick.news.
It is different from the other instances in one crucial way: Instead of running with open registrations and hoping that the community can support it through donations, Communick charges a low yearly payment from every member. We believe that charging a little bit from everyone is fairer, simpler and more sustainable than the current system.
The usual plan is $29/year which gives access to our Lemmy, Mastodon, Matrix and Funkwhale but now there is a Lemmy-only special offer for $19/year.
Some tidbits about the instance:
- Servers are hosted in Germany (Hetzner)
- it also offers multiple frontends, like old-reddit style frontend, Photon and Voyager (Apollo-like UI for mobile)
- Defederation is minimal and we fully share the reasoning from the lemm.ee admins on this matter.
- It does not allow creation of communities. The idea is to have a clear separation between “instances for users” and “instances for groups”. This makes managing and moderation of the instance a whole lot easier.
- if you are looking for a community or want to create a new one, I can help. I encourage people though to take a look at the topic-specific instances that are described on [email protected] and https://fediverser.network/
- We pledge 20% of the profits to the underlying projects. By becoming a member, you are also contributing to funding of Lemmy, Mastodon, Funkwhale and Matrix.
Signing-up to the instance
- Go to https://communick.com/packages/access
- Select the “Lemmy (single account)” option if you want only an account at Lemmy or the “Full Access” if you are also interested in Mastodon (microblogging), Matrix (messaging) and Funkwhale (music streaming). Your trial will start the moment you complete sign up at the portal.
- Complete the sign-up for Lemmy at https://communick.news/signup. Lemmy is the only one of Communick’s services that does not support Single-Sign On, so please use the same username you’ve used on the portal.
Interesting. First time seeing a Lemmy instance being subscription based.
Definitely an unique instance to take note of, having all the servers under one banner makes it easy to fund the servers.
Curious, the offering has been around for a while
Having 4000 users paying $19/year could fund a full-time admin for $76k.
Indeed, the question is how many people are ready to pay 20$ a year for Lemmy
It’s actually not that much but might still be a hurdle to some.
I’ve set up a monthly donation for my instance at 5€ per month. I end up paying more than 20€ per year, but I wasn’t forced to do so to sign up. Considering there’s so many instances to create an account on, I’m not sure how many people (will) sign up.
Interesting concept tho
