If there are a ton of small companies, they can easily add up to being larger overall than any singular employer. E.g. the University of Hawaii might be the largest singular employer in Hawaii, but education is not the largest overall industry in Hawaii.
I know it’s easy to only think of large singular companies, but it’s more detailed and better information to add up the entire employed population of everyone in the state and see what industries they work in.
