Mystery shower head holder doohickey [SOLVED]

We've been in our new house for over a month, and I spotted this mystery feature in the shower head rail holder for the first time. I have never seen anything like this. Anybody knows what this is ...

I have never seen this before. I have no idea what it’s for.
Any idea?

    I think you can pull on it to lower the shower holder. E.g. if you have kids and someone before them put the holder too high for them to reach, they can pull on this thing instead.

      That’s exactly what it it!

      I pulled on it harder and the shower head holder came down with it - although I had to fight the brake quite hard.

      Quite a clever thing.

      It doesn’t seem to do anything other than what you see in the video. It’s not connected to anything, and it offers very little resistance.

      It basically looks like a retractable keychain holder integrated into a shower head rail.
