Google announced the end of support for early Nest Thermostats in a support document earlier this year that largely flew under the radar. As of October 25, first and second generation units released in 2011 and 2012, respectively, will be unpaired and removed from the Google Nest or Google Home app.

Users will no longer be able to control their thermostats remotely via their smartphone, receive notifications, or change settings from a mobile device. End-of-support also disables third-party assistants and other cloud-based features including multi-device Eco mode and Nest Protect connectivity.

Why would you invite this sort of surveillance tech into your home? Google is not your friend. They do not have your best interests at heart.

If surveillance capitalism feeding algorithms had been resisted over the last couple of decades, you might not have Trump now.

They know when you come and go, and what you are doing when you are at home.

It absolutely did bring the surveillance state into the home. You welcomed it. They took that data, added it to all the rest, and created algorithms that engendered engagement that absolutely led to the division you see in your society, and to Trump.

You were ignorant to the intent, and the uses even seemingly benign data can be put to then. Clearly you still are now.

Here is a rule for you: ‘Anything prefixed with SMART, isn’t.’

It doesn’t matter that google weren’t primarily collecting that data. If they weren’t buying it off nest before they acquired the company, the fact that people were prepared to provide nest with that data is what caused them to acquire nest.

I see the upvotes. Sorry, but you people are so ignorant no wonder you were played so hard.

I have a smart thermostat, but it’s not from Google and is compatible with Home Assistant.

If surveillance capitalism feeding algorithms had been resisted over the last couple of decades, you might not have Trump now.

No, we’d still have Trump, and the two are unrelated.

People like Trump because he’s an outsider, which shows how frustrated people are in the establishment. They thoroughly rejected Jeb Bush, who was supposed to be a shoe-in, probably because they didn’t want a Bush dynasty. And because of that frustration with the establishment, we got orange man and his fascist friends.

To prevent Trump, we needed a massive shift in transparency in government and electoral reform so third parties have a real shot.

No you are unequivocally wrong, but it is a waste of time to repeat myself to the ignorant, I will just block.

If you don’t want to actually have discussions, what’s the point of being on Lemmy? Why not just post on a blog or something?

Who knows, maybe you’ll convince me! It’s happened multiple times here on Lemmy and back on Reddit. Bring evidence with sound reasoning and I’ll do the same, and hopefully we’ll both come away with more understanding.

Or you can just block and move on. You do you.
