    Imagine seeing a fascist country like Russia led by a Russian Imperialist who acts more like a mob boss than anything else and being like “yep, what a beacon of Leftism”. Nothing says socialized ownership of the means of production like your leadership living lives of extreme luxury as they drift from dacha to dacha.

          Imperialism is an economic relationship, it’s not just when countries go to war. Using financial tools (loans, bonds, restructuring, etc) to trap an imperialized nation in underdevelopment and dependency, servicing debts instead of reinvesting in the nation.

          You know who is trapping Ukraine in debt right now? Here’s some highlights: $23.6 billion in external bonds denominated in dollars and euros, $16 billion to the IMF, and $7.5 billion to a bunch of Western countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Britain and the United States). Private lenders got in on the game too, the largest creditor being $700 million owed to U.S. agribusiness giant Cargill. Overall their external debt adds up to $104.8 billion.

          Never let a good crisis go to waste.

          Oh, and how much does Ukraine owe to Russia? A $3 billion bond and a $600 million loan owed to Russia. A drop in the ocean. Isn’t that interesting?

      putin is a reactionary, neoliberal piece of shit, likely with ties to nazbols, who’s currently running an expansionist campaign from russia. fascism and imperialism are something else

      edit: genuinely unsure if the downvotes are coming from putinists mad that i talked shit about putin or from libs who think putin is turbo-hitler and what russia is doing is somehow even remotely as bad as what the west has been doing routinely for over a century

        Not really. Nazbols and other Russian chauvinists do grudgingly support the war in Ukraine but before they were very much against Putin who refused to do precisely what you accuse him in next part:

        This isn’t expansionist campaign, it is liberation of Donbas and defense of Crimea. That’s why greatrussian chauvinists don’t like Putin, they would want empire back and it isn’t what Putin do.

        Also reductio ad Putinum is something libs usually do because they are incapable of freeing themselves fomr the clutch of the Great Man theory (especially that western propaganda purposefully push this kind of narratives).

          sounds like plausible deniability to me tbh. like he really wants more land, but doesn’t want to be accused of wanting more land bc he wants to maintain his public image of moderated, highly skilled political strategist, going against the west’s bloodlust. so he took the opportunity of ukraine’s descent into autocracy to take a little more land while being lauded as a liberator at the same time

          i’m not looking into the conflict closely, though, so i might be wrong

            It’s not really the case though. We can definitely see how Putin’s Russia don’t do landgrab because well, they don’t, they don’t even grab anything in central Asia and Caucasus even though the region is notoriously unstable in most part because of constant USA meddling even despite not only a lot of people there would welcome Russia and it would be incredibly advantageous to Russia to secure the trade routes (like Kazakhstan) which are in constant threat of regime change.

            In fact we could see this clearly in cases of South Osetia which was in process of ethnically cleansed by Georgia but Russia after their military intervention was content to return to status quo and didn’t even annexed South Ossetia not to mention any other part of Georgia. Next was Kazakhstan where Russia helped to foil the colour coup but then just retreated. And Armenia which had its western comprador government betray the people and allowed Azerbadijan (yet another western supported country) to annex and ethnically cleans Nagorno Karabach - Russia proposed help but were refused and did nothing despite having a nominal alliance.

            About Ukraine, right now Russia is clearly liberating separatist regions which Ukraine was ethnically cleansing for 9 years before Russia joined the ongoing civil war, and didn’t even do it to all of them. We could really only call this any land grab if Russia annex lands west of Kharkov and Odessa.
