I am trying to use a Thermaltake Blacx Duet (ST0015) HDD Docking Station with my Linux computers (Linux Mint and Ubuntu, all latest).
I have a SATA disk plugged in one of the bays and when I connect it to a USB port with its cable (everything is brand new) nothing happens.
lsusb returns:

The only message in dmesgrelated to usb is:
[ 474.891877] usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage
which I understand means that the usb-storage module is loaded.
Same behavior in Ubuntu.
Does this mean that the hardware is just incompatible or is there anything more I can try?
Do you have it plugged into the wall?
Yes, there is a Power LED and it is on.
The reason I asked that is 3.5” drives can’t operate from usb bus 5v like 2.5” ones can and you didnt specify.
Have you tried hot plugging the drive into the dock while it’s plugged into the computer? If the usb sata controller is slow on the uptake it might miss the relatively narrow chance to report to the pc what’s going on.
Don’t worry about damaging your drives doing that btw, it’s extremely unlikely that you have a disk whose firmware doesn’t support it and all sata ports support it electrically.
As an addendum: is the drive even good? Do you have a known functional disk to test with?
E: oh yeah, on the off chance that the disk is uninitialized get everything plugged up and do an lsblk to show the various block devices. Sometimes if I plug up a disk with no partition table or superblock or whatever gpt uses nothing happens but lsblk shows it and I can mess with it.
Are you able to try it with other SATA drive models?
Are there any relevant BIOS Settings like “legacy USB” that could make a difference? Do you have the latest firmware for the motherboard?
I used to have one of these but swapped it out for an Orico because the thermaltake did not operate consistently. no issues with the Orico regardless of OS.
