Hi, I want a nice easy-to-use graphical program which can show image thumbnails atleast, and provide an easy way to encrypt images, and ideally other files too. I heard of a few programs but some dont show images and some look a bit dated ui wise. Seeing image thumbnails is pretty much a requirement as it would be alot of swapping back and forth otherwise.
I am using KDE (and nixos), I dont think that matters much for what I want.
It just seems overkill to have a entire partition or drive encrypted for probably a few images, not like 2-5 but there are plenty I want encrypted, there is plenty I dont need encrypted.
Without using fde such as through luks. You can’t be 100% sure it’s not stored (at least temporarily) in unencrypted locations such as swap or another program’s temporary place. That would make it trivial for someone to run data recovery software to retrieve it. Thanks to hardware accelerated encryption there shouldn’t be any significant overhead. Your boot times might be marginally longer.
Having a separate encrypted space like what you’re asking for is helpful if the medium is portable or you intend to give it to another person.
Also note that thumbnails of your files will be stored in a different folder on your drive. These would be generated by a file manager or file chooser dialogue.
As you’re using KDE and NixOS I imagine you got Dolphin as your file manager.
edit: While the below is great for an encrypted backup of your images that you can move to a thumbdrive or another computer I recommend you look at the Vaults mentioned by @[email protected] for encryption directly on the machine.
Step 1: - Create an encrypted and password protected 7-zip
Step 2: - Settings for the 7-zip
Step 3: - Opening up the encrypted 7-zip file by double clicking and entering the password from Step 2
Step 4: Place the picture folder and the 7-zip next to each other
Removal of pictures from the 7-zip is as simple as rightclicking on them:
Adding pictures to the folder can be done as a simple drag and drop:
While this allows you to see the thumbnails of your unencrypted images before drag and dropping them to the 7-zip you will not be able to see thumbnails when they’ve been encrypted (Compare left and right view in drag and drop image).
You can double click images in the encrypted archive to open them up though.
So use gocryptfs and mount it to a folder.
Modern crypto is really fast though, your CPU has aes extensions that make the performance hit negligible. Doing the entire drive isn’t unreasonable.
