Ad makers saw how people began to compare how cute and witty SuperBowl ads were, and it became their Cannes. Then they manufactured a whole subculture around competitive advertising, and said, “Look, people love seeing ads! Forget any ethics we ever had about invasive advertising, people love this shit! Let’s stick it in their faces everywhere they look and they’ll love it even more!”
