I use a few social media platforms at the same time. I’m used to seeing the same things on each platform. That’s how the internet has been for years - you read the same things on the same five sites.
To be fully transparent, Lemmy isn’t at the top. I don’t post much and I lurk. Sometimes I post a comment here and there.
But this past week, I’m seeing more and more interesting content in the “Everything” section of Lemmy that I didn’t see in my other social media feeds. New communities and more interesting convos.
Uncertain if the fediverse has gotten a wave of new posters, some algorithm has changed, or every other social media company is sucking more and more thanks to America Team Police…
Just wanted to share my extremely limited anecdotal non-fact checked viewpoint.

Not sure about divergence, but there are definitely a lot more interesting posts now. I’ve tried fediverse (kbin) when the reddit API shit happened. I’m a gamer and there weren’t many interesting gaming posts at the time so I returned back to Reddit like a week later. This time with the Discord bullshit I gave fediverse another try and it’s so much better now. It’s still not as many compared to Reddit but at least there are actual content I enjoy scrolling.
The thing that I love about Lemmy is at least it’s not as infected with bots as other places. It’s the equivalent of going to rancher’s market to get my spicy comments and bickering ya know.
Definitely! I’ll look at the upvote counter(stupid me I know) and think to myself ‘oh that’s not much engagement’ and then remind myself that it’s actually real people(most likely) and not just bots.

I’ve been noticing a rampant increase in bot farming attempts, so that’s at least a signifier that we’re definitely becoming popular with the regulars

There seem to be more and more comments and I have seen posts with almost 1000 upvotes in top 24h in ALL. It was usually more around the 300.

Bots vs people
You think there are a lot of bots on here? I noticed a few influence agents pushing israeli bullshit, forget the instances. They had a suspiciously large number of votes for them. Others are grinding axes, hard to say which might be influence agents necessarily, but plenty that could be, pushing wrongheaded opinions that when challenged with reasoned arguments reply with personal attacks and obscure the issue with slander. But that is learned behavior from the top down so it could be they just emulate rotten people.

You could be right: The bots have been very bad but I agree that I’m seeing them get shutdown faster lately.
I think part of it is that Reddit has gotten so bad that even casual users are noticing that it’s basically indistinguishable from any other corporate social media.
and also the massive amount of bots, and propaganda that are never dealt with when reddit purges, it may get some of them but it only targets the non-political ones.
Concidentally, as of lately, Reddit has seemed more “dead” to me than usual.
And that’s not even counting the egregious “cloned threats” where, within the span of one or a few days, the exact same comments, but with all-different user names, are being copied underneath two headlines with similar topics; or the weird, LLM-written and machine-translated comments that very badly match the topic at hand or the OP they’re replying to, something that’s especially obvious if you visit non-English-language subs.many users on reddit said alot of POSTS are AI BOT posts , so im not surprised.
There has also been an influx of users on Piefed which might explain why things seem more active on here.
I automatically assume Redditors are bots from some state actor. I’ve seen enough obvious campaigns that it’s impossible for me to trust anymore
The vast majority of bots, and it’s more accurate to say influence operations as real people direct fake accounts with bots, and now chatbots, sophisticated ones for some issues, are working for commercial interests. Trade groups of all types. Any toxic chemical they use has keywords scramble a response to any mention of it. Real agents cycling through accounts backed by bots. AI, actually Indians, in many cases, as they’ve good english and can work for cheaper.
But the State Actors are getting worse, the US aligned ones exploded in number and visibility after the Venezuela operation I noticed. I’m sure the build up to the next forever war with Iran because Israel first has armies of bots. I’ve seen some influence operations on lemmy here in regards to that reddit must be overrun by it.
Russian bots have been noted rewriting history on Wikipedia for Baltic and ex-ussr countries recently too. I read about #estonia having to fight to preserve accurate history about Soviet imperialism on Wikipedia.
It was also noticable that contra-US bots were driving polarization leading up to the US election. There were a number of topics that went silent the day after election.
Influence operations, mechanized troll divisions and supporting units, were also deployed en masse to back up the democratic annointee that was chosen without contest in 2024 in July with over 4 months to go. Many just getting shitty with anyone calling for a challenge, an electable candidate that wasn’t at 30% or less approval all term and hadn’t won a single state in the primary of the previous term, and anyone calling for a winnable strategy otherwise. Shadowy groups, many right aligned, russian types, many oligarchs that don’t want a strong reform minded democratic leader to revoke their newly acquired license, and out and out aligned with the Republicans that want an opponent they could beat, all surely have influence operations across social media, and interfere into democratic nominations.
As I was saying at the time, Bannon must have been high fiving his jailers, (turns out they were also high fiving the mobsters in the prison, that’s whose table Bannon sat at, he palled around with the Italian mobsters in there, to the surprise of no one that’s been paying attention,) when they chose her without contest, when their influence operations got on left aligned groups online to level vitriol at anyone arguing for a winning strategy. The democratic establishment hire their own influence operations as well in service of keeping control of the party for the aristocracy/donors.
Social Media is just too corrupted, the companies can’t be trusted to moderate in good faith, powerful groups have their hooks in them and get them to moderate dishonestly, they not only ignore connected influence ops, they dishonestly violate real users not breaking the rules to any reasonable person standard, on the words of these influence operations, be it homeland security sending lists of accounts to find random reasons to ban, or by them mass flagging an account with their armies of bots until something sticks.
Everything is overrun now, over half of users are estimated to be fake accounts now, and over half the content on the internet is written by machines. Half of the websites, those enshitified search results you get since 2021? All machine written to hit search engine results. Every organization with money, every country, can hire these well developed industry of buggering reality, be it russia on wikipedia or groups conning people into throwing an election by choosing the wrong person, or an industry that systematically poisons entire watersheds and populations to save a marginal amount of money on waste disposal. And it works, all of it works. Without leadership and organization in opposition the organized interests of big money wins every time.

Could be true, but this suggests weak evidence.
The evidence in favor is circumstantial. The account stopped posting when Maxwell was arrested. On the other hand, I cannot find the mentioned screencap from /u/Hasharin cited by Vice and Factually, in which they had a recent conversation with MaxwellHill. The screencap was mentioned in a different article in 2024. It would be really surprising if it were recent, because the account has been inactive for so long. Hasharin has mentioned the theory in three recent replies to a thread. I thought I would get a firm opinion by looking into it, but the refutation was not very specific either.
politics, during the first few months of OCT 7 ISRAEL invasion of gaza, it was pretty obvious it was designed to hurt the campaign of biden, and people on “r/pics” was trying to get people to not vote for biden, it was definitely propaganda, i was reporting them left and right.(thats where i recieved my first worldnews ban) and i was able to avoid getting banned with a different acct by avoiding that sub, up until reddit decided to purge wholesale last year.
Yeah, people seeing pictures of children being killed in a genocide and reacting badly is obviously just a conspiracy!
I think it’s partly because reddit has become an overflowing bucket of shit where bots accuse bots of being bots and real humans get permabanned for breaking bs rules or saying no-no words.

When you say ‘everything section’ do you mean the ‘all’ section or a specific community? Sorry if there’s an obvious answer, I just joined a few days ago & I’m still learning my way around
I’m using Sync (I’m lazy with getting new apps and it hasn’t pissed me off yet) and the button is called “Everything”. So I guess it’s the All section!
As someone who used Sync up until I was forced to replace my phone recently, I recommend Summit.
Sync is no longer developed I don’t think. Thunder is the closest and majorly configurable.
That explains the “sync” logs I’ve been seeing! Is sync a good user experience?
Sync was a fantastic Reddit client (I started using it back in 2016), then during the API debacle the dev turned it into a Lemmy app and frankly it was the best on the market by a wide margin. But then he just vanished, and various things have gradually stopped working as it’s not keeping up with the latest Lemmy updates. When upvotes stopped working a few months ago, I bit the bullet and have now moved to Summit, which has the closest user experience to Sync of all the Lemmy apps I’ve found (although it doesn’t have anywhere close to the same level of polish as Sync did).
I love Sync but be aware that it is no longer being actively developed. It has some bugs that will never be fixed, and might break entirely in the future.
I’ve been using “Thunder” and so far it’s done a pretty wonderful job of things. Very easy to view and scroll on a phone. A lot of options you can set and customize.
Swapped to voyager as my main, thunder doesn’t let you reply to dms which is annoying every once in a while.

Thunder was still not quite what I was looking for last time I tried it. I am very happy with Summit now, personally.
Haven’t tried summit. Thunder is pretty close to a clone of what I was using on reddit before the api fiasco they had and I bailed. Relay for reddit.
Has the developer confirmed he’s dropped the project for good, or is he still just MIA? I know he’s gone over a year between updates before, so unless he’s announced that he’s done, there’s still a small possibility of an update in the future.
This is longer than he’s ever been MIA for before, this time I think it’s about 2 years since the last update, and there are several literally critical bugs. But this is the downside with absentee developers like that, you never know for sure whether it’s abandonware or not. But he seems to be actively working on other stuff still so I just don’t think Lemmy took off enough in popularity for him to feel like it’s worth his time monetarily. Makes sense if this was always more of a business than a passion project, which is the way it appears to be to me.
The least he could do would be to just say that he is done developing the Lemmy app. Just vanishing is a dick move.
Especially when one of the apps payment models is a monthly subscription. I hope most people have cancelled by now, but subscriptions tend to be sticky, which is partly why buisnesses like them so much.
I’m using photon in my mobile browser, but the ‘everything’ tab as well. Still learning but it’s not too steep of a curve. Feels very organic & I love the lack of ads
I’m sure that’s what they mean. I scroll with “New/All” and this is a fantastic way to read new stuff you have never heard about BUT the caveat is: this is an enjoyable scroll ONLY after you’ve developed a good block list of users, instances and communities. Otherwise, you’ll get inundated with the few but very vocal and toxic communities that make Lemmy feel like a clone of Reddit/Twitter/etc.
Ok cool, I figured but never hurts to double-check. I agree, the posts from some of those groups are insane, but it’s fine once you block them
I’m someone who just re-joined after trying out lemmy & kbin a couple years ago then dropping off after a few months. I can say the experience now is a lot better. There’s so much more content and activity.
I still use Reddit for more niche topics but I don’t miss it nearly as much as expected to.
NGL, I got permabaned there in October… just 2 weeks shy of 15 years… Found old.lemmy.zip, fell in and fell in love.
Haven’t missed Reddit at all.
I keep catching reddit bans for calling Trump a pedophile lol. Really tells you where their moderation is at these days.
Posts where you want answers/help get more useful engagement here and show up on all unlike reddit where your posts/comments get buried outside of niche communities

How so? I check that one occassionally, am fairly new to lemmy, I didn’t notice all that much different about that one but idk.
Oh it’s like old forum mode, where comment in an old thread bumps it to the top. It lets you see if people are still replying in a week old thread
