I don’t think it’s as simple as that — there is also bribe money from a bunch of the Arab petromonarchies, personal ego, and incompetent negotiation in the mix. There isn’t a single reason, which means that the aftermath is going to be handled in a way that’s incredibly detrimental to US interests.
