I’d like to say they’re opening up but it’s just two monopolies strengthen their power.
I recently tried to airdrop a file for somebody’s iDevice to another one of theirs and it didn’t work.
Free, open source, and cross platform LocalSend worked though
Localsend is my preferred open source alternative! Only downside is that it’s local network only. AirDrop works without WiFi, which is ideal in most spontaneous situations.
I’m gonna be honest, why? Even among iPhone users I’ve never heard people using airdrop. And I’ve never had someone offer to airdrop me a file. It’s always just “send it” to me/you, through whatever messenger app they’re already using, like text/RCS, whatapp, discord, etc.
It is nice if you prefer the original file with all the associated data/metadata instead of the stripped/transcoded copy that many messaging apps send. No need to cloud or message or nothing. Works without Internet. Just bulk-select 20 pics and tap on the person’s phone.
Probably will become more popular with so many leaving the cloud, as well.
The last time I heard about airdrop was when it was first introduced and motherfuckers were airdropping their dick pics on crowded airplanes and shit.
