Hey all, feel free to delete if sharing YT videos isn’t permitted, but I made a video on the Fediverse last week and specifically talking about Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, and Peertube.

Just thought I’d share in case anyone wanders by and wants an overview.

I i think it’s great that you’re spreading the word about the fediverse and helping get people off of big data.

You might consider using a youtube alternative for your channel, perhaps a PeerTube instance.

The best place for people with no knowledge of the fediverse to learn about it, is on the platforms they use now.

Have you thought about mirroring your youtube content to peertube? You can join an instance, set up mirroring, and let it be. No extra work.

P.S why did you find it underwhelming?

          I’ll consider doing that.

There’s a chapter on that in the video. :D But I was just vastly unimpressed with the quality of content and the UI. It’s not a viable YouTube alternative at this point, IMHO.

I did see that part, but I thought there was more to it. What would it need to become a viable youtube alternative?

I think finding other peertube Videos on other instances is really hard. I use a searchengine and then copy paste channels in my app which is not rellt userfriendliy IMO.

bTW: I am absolutely thankful for the work being put into peertube! I try to use it as much as possible but YouTube is still sadly my goto.

I have given up on accessing youtube, peertube, odyssey, dailymotion, and whatever else in the browser. Now it’s exclusively GrayJay because I can’t be bothered to search for videos on different platforms, create accounts on multiple platforms, subscribe to creators on multiple platforms and then check each feed individually. GrayJay just united them all for me.

But I see your point. For being supposedly federated, I don’t get why peertube requires pasting links into the search bar. Why can’t I find them with, you know, the search? It’s baffling. They had to invent https://sepiasearch.org/ for searching across all instances it seems, but it still requires pasting the link into the searchbar of your instance.

Good question. I was only on it for about 30 minutes, so I don’t really have extensive feedback other than it felt very low quality and too basic.

Are there any well-populated instances you would recommend? I could be convinced to give it another try.

I didn’t watch so maybe you did namedrop, but it’s not just Lemmy anymore - it’s Piefed and Mbin too! (I saw you had a “Lemmy” category)

It’s gotten a pretty good response, despite my channel being smaller. I think a lot of folks just don’t realize that there’s viable, enjoyable social media that is ad, AI, and algo-free.

I truly think most people would be receptive to the idea if they could just hear about it. The big corporate sites have so many problems.

Our two biggest obstacles in my opinion: a) the “instances” setup is mildly confusing for new users. b) Once you get here, the predominant culture is pretty homogenous and, to put it politely, politically intense.

to put it politely, politically intense.

          You think?

One of the things I love about the Fediverse is how easy it is to avoid political content. So many good filtering settings under the hood, especially on Mastodon, but with Lemmy you can just subscribe to non-political content and make your subs your default home page.

          We can be intense though.
