The United States is going to need massive reforms to regain the trust of its allies and trade partners. What structural and electoral reforms will we need in your opinion?
How can we prevent an extremist movement like MAGA or worse from gaining control of over half of congress and the presidency in the future?
Honestly I would say the structural rot has existed since the country’s foundation and MAGA is just the final mask off apex of oligarchy, if that makes sense? Founded by slaveowners, perverse incentives to be permanently at war, government system where corporate bribery is not only legal but the norm, entirely coopted “democracy”, etc.
You can’t really have a healthy government in a world with unchecked exploitation. Even under the most progressive Dem presidents the US was still doing horrible shit to the rest of the world to advance capitalist aims. I mean just look at literally every Latin American country having suspiciously coordinated anti leftist genocides in the late 1900s. The “freedoms” the indepence war was fought for were only for rich whites, the declaration of human rights was signed while under Jim Crow, the fact police have consistently gone unpunished for murdering POC… I could go on but you get the picture. Fixing all of that would imply uprooting the 200+ years of rot the country was built for, and I’m not sure what it’ll take. Small reforms are kind of doomed if the underlying systems of power aren’t meaningfully challenged. Despite being the richest country in the world we don’t have universal healthcare, and when it almost happened it was shot down by a blatant shill and nothing happened, so.
The author Doug Valentine has a lot of work on tracing the structural rot at the heart of the country if you’d like context. He totally predicted the 2020s. I’ve heard the book “The People’s History of the United States” is good too.
you mean like socialism?
This being on .ml feels like bait.
Get rid of the first past the post voting and the other voting shenanigans like gerrymandering. That ought to fix a lot not all but there is no solution for everything at once.
I think the US is going to balkanize within ~30 years as climate change starts fucking the biosphere
Great Lakes, West Coast, Great Plains, and The South™ all as their own nations.
We need a second Reconstruction.
Short and medium term, nothing can be done. The rot is in the dominant political party, 1/3 of voters and wall street and corporate America.
No one will trust the US for a lifetime because they have proven themselves beyond a shadow of a doubt to be an incapable partner unworthy of any kind of Trust. 20 years after Trumps death, even if the Dems sweep everything and fix the courts and similar institutions, society will still be littered with christo-fascists.
When/If they can somehow regain sanity, competence, the rule of law and always bargain in good faith, and everyone alive today is dead of old age and no one but history books remembers the march to authoritarianisn, people may learn to trust again. I say all of this as the optomistic view.
The more realistic view, is the US empire who modeled itself in many ways after Rome, maybe did it too well. These are going down as history repeating itself. Caligula and Nero come to mind of the current state of affairs and no one has any reason to hope it’s going to get better.
The US Empire is a genocidal settler-colony. Revolution and socialism are necessities. The Party for Socialism and Liberation has a program that outlines what a socialist government would look like in a Statesian context.
Trying to fix a dying empire will not help anyone. The US Empire is a dictatorship of capital, predominantly finance capital. Systemically no reforms capable of challenging that can or will be passed. MAGA is a symptom, not the disease.
Socialist revolution is the answer. Epstein class has been lying about it for 100 years because they know it’s the answer
People need to stop valuing money above all else and start holding other accountable for how they acquire it.
Massive antitrust action (especially in media) and wealth tax, getting money out of politics, prosecuting the rampant corruption.
The only way the United States can be reformed as a nation is by non democratic socialism being imposed .
But as federal oversight grows weaker I think some states will try, on their own , to come up with solutions to avoid their citizens from being so harmed by the corruption
Lock up all the billionaires and Republicans
