I wonder if they were ever in the IPv4 design stage talking like, “yeah of course we’ll probably never see more than 256 connected computers, but let’s play for way more than that! Let’s just make it 32 bit so we’re safe for a century at least. And we’ll probably have moved off of IP long before then.”
