Can we get a multi-million dollar B-2 Spirit flyover so I can forget about this tragedy and focus on the game instead please?
The NFL spent years trying to deny and cover up any link that emerged connecting head injuries sustained while playing football with long-term brain disorders. The NFL Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) Committee, first formed in 1994, reported in December 1999 that the number of head injuries had remained “remarkably the same over the course of four years.” The committee went a step further in 2004 when it suggested in an article published in Neurosurgery that “NFL players have evolved to a state where their brains are less susceptible to injury.”
The NFL has known this shit for close to 30 years now.
Kids are also susceptible:
3.2% of youth players (ages 9–14) concussed each season and higher risk in tackle-heavy roles like offensive linemen
Remove helmets and this problem goes away
I think the average lemmygoer doesn’t understand this “paradox”. Similar to how removing gloves tends to make combat sports safer.
researchers looked at health records of 19,824 NFL players who competed between 1960 and 2019
I suppose it’ll be interesting to see if these rates decline for more recent players as a result of the equipment and rules changes that the NFL continues to introduce.
Also removing lead gasoline from the equation.
