The composition of government officials in leadership positions is very different in China than other countries. More than 40% of them hold STEM related degrees. But more importantly it’s not like they’re exempt from the same mass surveillance everyone else is. There is no privacy, but it’s generally seen as a tradeoff for security. With such intense punishments and mass surveillance, I really don’t think they are.
