You’d think someone involved in this decision making process would ask literally anyone involved with NASA: Hey, if we deorbit the ISS, and give funding to private companies, they’ll build us a better space station, cheaper, right?
According to Elon Musk in 2016, Space X would have produced an unmanned Mars mission by 2018; and according to him in 2020 there should have been cargo trips in 2022
They should start a version of the Interkosmos program instead
