Good question! It’s because in this case the invaders (coming from below) will have their shields on the side the enemies are coming from. The defenders (coming from above) will have the shield facing away from their opponents

Not always. They were often used for decoration (especially with single towers like this, like you said), but it’s still a fun fact that I enjoy
