  • I know how you feel. I often find myself typing :w into notepad/word at work to save something. Or when I log into a machine that doesn’t have the vim extension in vscode I constantly type /something to search, only to realize that I actually wrote that in the file. Then using ‘u’ to undo just adds more characters and people look at me like I’m on some drugs. Just embrace it!

  • Exactly my experience. I often heard stories of vegans being like that, but I never ever saw it so I thought it was just made up to belittle vegans.

Then I joined lemmy and found out that I’m apparently in favour of massacres, slavery and rape because I consume meat/milk/eggs from time to time.

I imagine the vast majority of vegans just go about their lives and resprectfully discuss the ethics of animal consumption when the topic comes up, but these loud militant members really make vegans look bad and they sure as hell make it so that even less people consider going vegan

  • I actually like the idea of being able to see how many upvotes/downvotes came from specific instances much more than seeing the actual users. It would cover some of the positives mentioned in the github discussion:

-Could help fight bot and multiple-account voting (if we assume that people who make multiple accounts do it on the same instance)
-Could help identify voting-patterns from specific servers (obviously)

And then if something looks suspicious, the admins can already see who voted, so they could check out whether some user is abusing the mechanics.

I find that this approach might be worth talking about, but making user votes visible to all seems very unnecessary.

  • Well, this comic goes against what Plato wrote in the “Republic”. In it, Plato advocated for a city/country/polis which had three classes: the ruling class, the guardian class (military) and the ordinary folk. The ruling class would be made out of philosophers (multiple, so not just one or a few), but by “philosopher” it is meant someone who spent many decades studying philosophy since they were a child. I can’t remember the cut off age, but if someone were older than 13 or something like that, and they haven’t began their philosophical education (which, besides things we would traditionally consider philosophy, includes things like astronomy and mathematics), they weren’t eligible. So, by his own writing, Plato wouldn’t be fit for the ruling class.

  • That actually was a popular way of life for philosophers in late antiquity where they would abstain from sex for pleasure, but would still do it for conception. I can’t recall the name, but there was one dude who, when he figured out that he can’t have children, told his wife that she can leave him for someone else if she wants because he will not engage in sexual behaviour anymore.

This was from Edward J. Watts’ book on Hypatia.

  • If anyone is interested, I already commented on Plato’s position on sex in his dialogues in https://slrpnk.net/comment/4266874

But in short, the Symposium creates a complex web of how everything ties in, but the point made was that love is a messanger between humans and the gods, it draws people towards the form of the beautiful, and in his steps towards the Beautiful, the love of bodies is the first and lowest step, which when overcome by the next (love of the soul) is seen as nothing in comparisson. Socrates himself, presented as the ideal philosopher and lover, refuses Alcibiades’ sexual advances.

But the most explicit statement against sexual relationships is given in ‘Phaedrus’, where beauty and love for people reminds the soul of the form of Beauty, but the shameless part of the soul pulls the body towards sexual relations, to “mount them like an animal”, but the reasonable part of the soul, upon being reminded of Beauty, pulls back and subdues the shameless part.

Plato is against most physical things on a good day, but when it comes to love, sexual relations are out of the question because they miss the mark (knowledge of the forms) by a mile.
