Given how his management decisions are impacting Tesla (pushing out buggy, dangerous “full self-driving”, cutting corners on quality, the whole Cybertruck thing, and associating the brand with his junior-sci-fi ideas long after anyone stopped thinking that he’s some kind of visionary technologist, to say nothing of the weird far-right turn and habit of impregnating employees), it could be argued that he’s strangling a company that otherwise had excellent potential, and that at this stage, it would have a better chance under other management. I’m not sure if, say, the suits at General Motors or Ford could have made as much of an impact with it as a subsidiary, but they’d have certainly killed the Cybertruck or at least made it more like a conventional SUV.

IIRC, they do forbid third-party clients from their network. You can build it from source, but you won’t be able to connect to production Signal servers.

Third-party clients would not necessarily be a bad thing. Signal has limited resources, and as such has to cut corners. I for one would love a native desktop client that’s not Electron bloatware.

Parts of it are. The kernel is derived from a Mach microkernel (an experimental kernel in the 80s, which was theoretically supposed to allow different OS personalities to coexist in the same system, sharing resources; macOS’ Darwin/XNU kernel doesn’t implement this capability in full, but you do get the Mach Ports interprocess communication mechanism, and a BSD UNIX personality permanently attached).

In a sustainable world, energy can and should be cheaper than raw materials. We are only harvesting a tiny fraction of the solar energy hitting the earth, to say nothing of wind and geothermal power. Rolling out more renewables and energy storage and using some of the surplus power to switch from extracting new resources to recycling our waste would greatly lower our footprint.

They elected a right-of-centre minority government which depends on the local neo-Nazi party (the “Sweden Democrats”) for votes and so panders to them. They’re halfway into their term, and polling suggests that it’ll be a 1-term government, with a left-of-centre coalition almost certainly taking over in 2026.
