They DO though. They sell the default search engine to Google for billions knowing they’re profiting from the ads indirectly… So, they’re really just subcontracting it…

I was implying the fact that Apple doesn’t need to though, because they monopolise things via the app store, and with other foul play (like requiring additional intervention if you want to run an app from outside the store on Mac). They have full control over monitoring what apps and what kind of apps are popular, so they can target them with their own competitors.

They also have some fairly hefty requirements from developers, and even try to get a cut of subscription fees despite doing nothing.

In the case of Pebble as an example, they delayed the pebble app, launched their own watch at the same time, and because they fucked Pebble over, they never stood a chance.

Just to further things, Republicans have a clear bias. When the head of google was in congress, they weren’t really asking questions, but they were incorrectly stating things like Google was tracking their phone anywhere it moves

And yet, Apple seems to dodge every single case. They don’t even allow IOS to run on other platforms. Whereas, there are Android phones which are completely degooglified.

I’ve been onsite plenty of times when they’ve been cutting that stuff up. Some owners argued better PPE would be enough for the Stonemasons, but it won’t protect other people where its being cut.

Furthermore, nobody NEEDS engineered stone anyway, and people tend to take shortcuts when they are in a rush

And its mainly the workers affected. The people selling it are sometimes the ones who aren’t even cutting it up (especially because they know there are risks).

Feel bad for my friend though who now has silicosis and no way to cure it.

When it’s cut for bench tops and such , that’s what exposes people.

Lots of stonemasons here in Australia now have silicosis because of it.

Natural stone has far less issues and there is stone available which doesn’t cause it

Business owners were also claiming they weren’t given enough time to switch. Everyone including me (I have a friend with silicosis now) has known engineered stone was dangerous to work with for years.

So they had years of warning that it was dangerous But they pretend like it was unexpected.

Here in Australia we just banned engineered stone because it tends to cause silicosis

Fragmentation isn’t great, but it can be beneficial in some cases too. I’ve contributed to a number of projects.

Over the last 20-30 years, I’ve seen plenty of projects fail, and new ones take over.

If you take a look at arts/eaudio and the other sound servers of 20 years ago. All failed, because Pulseaudio consolidated and killed them eventually. Now, Pulseaudio is on its way to getting killed by Pipewire. And one could argue its a waste of resources… but, the changeover is actually super awesome (for JACK)

One other good example of the fragmentation argument was Xfree86. Lots of people argued against Xorg at the time, and ultimately, Xfree86 died ages ago. If you asked me 20 years ago, I would have said KDE was dead, but now Gnome and KDE and carved out VERY different products, that suit very different people. Both are awesome in their own way

Everyone was freaking out when devFS got deprecated. But, udev was an amazing replacement

Linux is evolving FAR quicker than Windows or MAC (mac OS has barely changed in a decade). And, many ideas introduced in linux are stolen by Windows and Apple.

At the end of the day though, sometimes a rewrite is needed of things. What really matters is that it doesn’t fragment the desktop experience (and, it won’t in this case)

I used to think this way, that it was about efficiency exclusively

But the reality is, any contribution is better than none, and a lot of these things implemented you don’t really understand how important they are until a while later often

One consideration also is that Germany is apparently considering to continue their Linux migration, so things like this may also be based on feedback from admins

Suse has definitely carved their own niche as a Linux distro and it’s actually sad they’re not more successful because a lot of their tools are pretty cool
