  • The short version is even the seemingly well-meaning ones are making or alluding to promises they just can’t keep.

The key problem with cryonics is that water expands into ice crystals when frozen, and the human body is 70% water. Tissues, including critical brain tissue, are destroyed. Dessication before freezing would also cause damage. Some firms say they have the secret sauce or are close to it, but nobody has answered this question AFAIK.

And then there’s the longevity. These facilities claim to be able to run decades or even centuries, without failure, but that is an extremely high bar regardless of how much money you throw at it. Power fluctuations and equipment failure take their toll. There are already stories of cadavers turning into soup in their care.

  • Idaho-Montana is white supremacist doomsday preppers, but it looks like someone scrubbed something to that effect out.

Going srs on the meme here, but irregular fighters are generally terrible. No standard of training or fitness, no command structure, no logistics networks. Fighting behind enemy lines with little to no support is usually the bailiwick of highly trained commandos, not tubby white dads who go hunting once a year during 6-day rifle season. All these people would be fodder without getting their shit together first.

Oh, and we’re proving ourselves to be a bunch of yellow-belly cowards every single day the Republicans remain in power. There is not an ounce of martial pride in being an American.

  • SD cards are one of the most volatile mediums for data storage. Flash memory in general runs the risk of discharge over time. Being powered every now and then can help IIRC.

I’ve looked into long-term data hoarding and found that there’s not too much consensus on the best mediums. They all have their problems. Most turn their noses up at the idea of a set-it-and-forget-it system, preferring laboriously maintained arrays of HDDs. These fail somewhat regularly so they maintain multiple backups and plan/build around that.

I like optical media, but its problems include high cost per GB, taking up significant physical space, the inability to rewrite data, slow speed, and the waning availability of disk drives. Its longevity also depends on the specific technology the disk uses. Some disks are chemically active and the chemicals can break down over time. These can have comparable life to just storing it on a USB drive or something, so I wouldn’t bother with those.

I’ve been using discs specifically made for longevity called M-DISCs. They are supposedly chemically inert and can last for hundreds of years. They’re expensive compared to normal BDXLs, you need a bluray drive rated for burning them, and some people say they’re hokey…their lifetime claim is pretty lofty, to be fair. I also use archival gold DVDs (4.7GB) for smaller files.

  • I’ve recently been burning BDXL on Linux using Brasero and a nothing special LG drive. If you can select the burn speed, do not select maximum, I think that is what skunked the first disc I attempted. It will be very slow, and the UI will appear to freeze, but it does burn successfully after several hours.

I’ve been burning my GOG library slowly in the background and throwing the disks in some jewel cases, and then putting it all in an old ammo can with some desiccant.

This is probably one of my bad takes, but here goes.

I imagine for some people at least, saying “I’m asexual” is easier than saying “I’ve been subjected to some sort of sexual trauma that makes the idea of being sexually involved with anyone incredibly painful and therefore I have no interest.”

But I guess someone can come to have no sex drive without trauma? But that’s hard for me to wrap my head around too, like someone who doesn’t enjoy food, or music.
