No, you can’t short the pads. If there’s no capacitor there then there likely never was unless you can see obvious damage. Not all components are placed when manufacturing. A picture would help but it could be a decoupling capacitor which has been deemed unnecessary or not required for the model. So it’s unlikely to be the issue. It could still be other capacitors that are getting old but it would be the electrolytic ones.

Make sure the bed isn’t wobbly. This happened to me as well. I had varying results until I fixed that. I’m on my phone at the moment and unfortunately don’t have it. I think you can find it on Cults3D if you search for sprite extruder strain relief.

I have the S1, I will strongly recommend you to print a strain relief for the ribbon cable from the extruder. Mine broke rather quick and creality sent a replacement just from hearing that the extruder stopped working so it’s probably a common issue
