  • Lots of little things, but the straw that broke the camel’s back was the constant pop-ups asking me to try out Copilot in Win10, harassing me daily on both on my personal PC and my work laptop.

Windows has been on thin ice since the trash fire that was Win8, and I’d only stuck with it for Nvidia driver support for gaming. I’ve been watching Proton development for years now, and putting it through its paces on my older PCs every few months, so I knew I was ready to make the switch for about a year before I finally pulled the trigger. I justified putting it off with the thought that “I can build my next PC around an AMD graphics card amd make the switch then.”

Then Win11 and all its garbage was announced, AI took off, and Microsoft started pushing their slop on my machine harder than ever. It was too much. I switched to Mint DE on my current machine and haven’t looked back.

  • Nintendo DS. Loved how it felt in my hands.

The DS Lite was too sharp and felt fragile. The 3DS was a gimmick, and the 2DS was the best 3DS version, but lacking folding hurt how portable it was. It never felt right having the screens exposed in my pocket. Losing GBA compatibility was also a deal breaker.

The OG DS was a perfect evolution of the GBA and I will take both of mine to my grave.

  • My last foray into Linux gaming was back in the early-2010s, and I was mostly just trying to get EVE Online to run unsuccessfully. I was running a laptop that was top if the line (in 2009) and my PCs were cobbled together from old Dells and HPs donated by family and friends or retired and given away by my company IT team.

Steam on Linux was nice, and would show you which games in your library had Linux native versions to install. I held out on that and browser gamed for a while. Played a lot of Runescape and Minecraft. Taught myself to code a bit, but didn’t really get anywhere with that.

Eventually I had money and time to put together a “proper” gaming PC, and of course I put Windows on it since I wanted to get an NVidia graphics card as I’d had so much trouble with the AMD drivers on my laptop.

Ran Windows for gaming and kept Linux on the laptop since then. First PC ran Win7, which i loved. Next one ran Win 8, which I hated. Current one was running Win 10, which was meh, and I’ve only soured on it over time. Made the switch back to Linux last week after I got tired of M$ constantly asking me if I want to try Copilot on /both/ my work and personal PCs.

Proton is fucking great. Never going back. The old laptop is still running strong after 15 years. It’s got BunsenLabs installed at the moment.

  • I just started and I’m having fun with it so far! Playing a mage and just unlocked my first specialization. Went with the one that gives meteor.

I think I soft-locked my save while I was having disconnect issues. I can’t leave the area anymore at all. Contemplating starting over. I’m not too far in yet. GW2 and PoE are running fine now, but LE is crashing every time I try to exit the end of time zone without fail.

  • All fair points!

When I think of Star Wars I think of a fantasy adventure in SPACE!

Luke swinging across a pit to escape the Stormtroopers and save the princess. The ear candy that is Jango Fett’s seismic charges. R2 firing a lightsaber out of his head from Jabba’s yacht. Yoda lifting the X-wing out of the swamp. Podracing.

These were the things George Lucas was really good at. Quotable, cheesy dialogue. Intense action scenes. Over the top drama. Eye candy.

I don’t think of it as dark or complicated. It can tell dark stories, and I love what the EU has done in that space, but it’s ultimately an optimistic setting where light triumphs over darkness.

    Best to Worst

    3, Solo, 5, R1, 6, 4, 1, 2, 7, 8, 9

RotS has a special place in my heart since I grew up with the prequels. Getting to watch Anakin’s fall into becoming Darth Vader was incredible. It really felt like the whole series had been building up to that one moment.

Solo is my favorite of the Disney offerings since it recaptured the fun of Star Wars. It’s stupid and schlocky and I love every minute of it. Really wish it hadn’t bombed and I blame TLJ entirely. We could be in a golden age of standalone Star Wars movies like Solo and Rogue One if not for TLJ and ROS ruining everything.

  • I use it daily for connecting it to my car stereo, and about once a month when I mow my lawn or have to fly on a plane. I’ll never buy a phone without one.

I prefer wired headphones. I don’t want to worry about keeping them charged, and the few pairs of wireless headphones I have tried died or had the buttons stop working after a few uses from getting waterlogged with sweat, while I’ve been using the same pair of $6 wired headphones for 10 years without issues.

I don’t care for Bluetooth or USB audio connections as they don’t always work intuitively, they might take multiple button presses to set up, and every manufacturer seems to think they need to be set up in a slightly different way, while the auxiliary audio cable just works with no setup.
