My general advice is just jump in and give it a whirl! Distros are written to a drive and then you can boot directly to them. You can use your laptop drive but if you’re just checking things out to decide if you like the OS, you can just boot off a thumb drive without erasing your laptop drive. Look for Mac friendly distros that work with your processor (m series is different than Intel so your Mac’s age matters).
