  • A benign scan could just be looking for an ftp server to connect to or a repeater or relay server of some sort. There are plenty of open services people make available for free and the fact that you would consider it an attack it doesn’t make it one.

At minimum you could be alerted to look for someone attempting to connect to your ftp server with a single basic anonymous authentication vs someone flooding that port with known malicious software attacks, and block the latter across your entire network and effectively ignore the former. Really it seems like you’re advertising your lack of imagination in this context than a legitimate lack of possible uses for spoofing open ports.

  • At a guess, you might tell the difference between some benign scan and an attempt to actually take advantage of the port, perhaps to use as a trigger to automatically ban an ip address? or a way to divert malicious resources to an easy looking target so they are less available in other areas?

The difference between someone scanning for open ports and someone attacking a port they find open seems significant enough to at least track and watch for patterns… Whether that’s useful for the majority of users or not is rarely why a feature is implemented.

  • Well ‘the privilege of living in California’ is more accurate than it might seem. Everywhere is a tradeoff, and you could figure like 30% is ‘the privilege of living in the US’, and then everywhere else you might live is a tradeoff between taxes, higher/lower pay rate, higher/lower cost of living, more/fewer options for socialization, better/worse infrastructure, etc. Move out of the US and options increase drastically…from far higher taxes and the ‘privilege to live in a European country with lots of socialized services like health care and education’ to far lower taxes in some middle eastern countries but being extremely careful about how much skin you show, and maybe don’t mention your ‘ex’ marriage status, to everything in between.

You could move to a place with lower taxes and maybe be happier…or maybe way worse off depending on a thousand other factors. But the tax rate where you live is certainly one of the legitimate things to take into account.

  • Brother printers were the last straw in throwing away they last inkjet I ever hope to own.

Want to scan something into your computer, you say? Sorry, can’t do that because you’re low on magenta!

No idea if their laser printers try the same crap, because I avoided that brand when it came to picking one out, but holy crap what an off-putting experience.
