Reminds me of when half the 2010 election cycle was fixated on Park51, an office complex that was being converted into a community center financed and managed by Muslim residents of NYC.
The Republicans termed it the “Ground Zero Mosque” and made it the centerpiece of a crusade to race-bait voters nationwide. They won that election season in a landslide, and spent the next eight years pushing increasingly white-supremacist policies through the House.
Wonder what will happen if reactionaries win in NYC again?
I actually had a coworker that worked in one of the twin towers prior to 9/11 (fortunately he wasn’t working the day it happened), and he thought the ‘ground zero mosque’ hysteria was the stupidest shit. Everyone I talked to in NYC about it at the time did, but the media never gave a shit about that or that the majority of the protestors weren’t from or living in NYC.
Weird coincidence with current politics, that’s also the election that Cuomo became governor.
