On another post somewhere, someone said “It shouldn’t be a crime if it’s objectively hilarious”.

    I think that applies here.

But according to police, driving an unlicensed motorized vehicle — even one that’s made for a child — on a road meant for full-sized cars is against the law.

You gotta be f’ing kidding me. No exceptions exist for engine power or size? Are they arresting all the 5 year olds driving in the street?

No, they aren’t arresting the 5 year Olds, and they explained it.

Typically when you find someone with a suspended license driving something like this barbie car, it’s a way they think they can get around the law.

This guy, to his credit, took it in stride.

But only because they aren’t, not because it’s not illegal.

Are e-bikes and scooters not legal? Those have electric motors that are likely more powerful than that.

Seems to me a stern “go home, you knucklehead” would be the appropriate response.

If its on the road in BC, it needs to be licensed with ICBC, unless you’re a recent transplant from elsewhere. Exceptions exist for e-scooters and ebikes, but they also aren’t technically allowed on open road.

ICBC’s base insurance looks expensive, but it delivers better base insurance than most other places extended insurance.

It is also likely a matter of registration and safety.

Yeah, it is a funny sight. Unless you are another car on the road. Basically all the safety assists won’t work with what is a glorified plastic dolley and you have someone whose head is basically at bumper level on even sane vehicles. Its similar to how good drivers actually slow down or veer into the oncoming traffic lane (assuming it is empty) when they are overtaking someone wobbling back and forth in the bike lane.

Lincoln said of the arresting officer. “He was filling out all of this paperwork, saying ‘This is my first time!’”

the poor police officer had to start his job with this case

    ACAB

He wasn’t driving an American mega vehicle so he was removed from the road for his “safety”.

Edit: oh shit I dropped this /s

      Right.

So someone riding around drunk on a barbie car with a suspended license, on the street is an ok thing.

      🤦🏼

depends on how it was done, but in general, yes

what’s next, you gonna arrest people for riding a bicycle drunk on a bike path?

Technically, if the bicycle is motor assisted, then yes that would also illegal in Canada and on rare occasion. There was a recent case here: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/amherst-man-charged-with-impaired-driving-while-riding-e-bike-1.7576394

However, the original story and this one share a common theme – attempts to circumvent a driving ban by using a motorized vehicle that straddles a grey area of the definition. And both involved them playing in traffic.

As far as I know, no recent cases have involve true non-motorized vehicles. Legal precedent suggests that bikes, skateboards, horses, etc., are allowed to be operated over limit. However, you can still be charged with all sorts of secondary things depending on how you’re operating.

Yes, obviously. Why the fuck wouldn’t it be?

Streets are for people. That means:

        • Walking in the street is an OK thing.
        • Roller-skating in the street is an OK thing.
        • Skateboarding in the street is an OK thing.
        • Riding a bike in the street is an OK thing.
        • Riding a horse in the street is an OK thing.
        • Driving a horse-drawn carriage in the street is an OK thing.

So why should driving a kids’ plastic toy car, which has similar performance to the above, be any different?

High-powered fast vehicles like cars and motorcycles are the exception in requiring a license, registration and insurance, because they are the interlopers. Everything else is there by right.
