As a German who actually paid attention to pop music in the 00s, I’m rather surprised at how few of these artists I recognize. I’m not surprised at how few of these artists sing in German, though.

    TIL Fennesz is Austrian!

Edit: And Soap & Skin, damn, never even considered that she might not be from the US.

Some of them only ever were successful in Austria, especially those who were artificially pushed by one of our national radios at the time (Ö3 & FM4). Others were highly successful internationally, but only within their specific genre.

I’d guess there are a few ones who had airplay in Germany at that time, with Christina Stürmer as the probably most obvious example?

Can’t remember ever hearing from Christina Stürmer until like a couple of years ago, and that was probably because I looked up female, German-language rock singers. Though it wouldn’t have stood out much among the likes of Juli and Silbermond, so I might have heard her songs without realizing. I did know Texta and Manuva, though, they appeared on several songs of German HipHop acts I listened to.

DJ Ötzi was also wildly popular in Germany : /

Ah, of course DJ Ötzi, that makes a lot of sense that he was wildly popular!

And its absolutely true that Christina back then was very much within the sound of bands like Juli and Silbermond
