Character System – Creation (with nonbinary gender option)

How the hell is that supposed to work? Won’t the server register the character as either male or female anyway?

I assume locally you just display whatever gender’s dialogue regardless, but your character on the server will naturally have the wrong gender?

Or maybe the server-side validation of selected body type/gender isn’t actually enforcing a match, despite the client only offering one or the other?

Interesting. Honestly I’d love to see blizzard endorse something like this and maybe even work with. Though that’s probably far fetched. Ultimately it’s the content that makes them money. This would allow for the possibly of Linux BSD haiku and other native clients as well as possibly arm and riscv native binaries as well. It could “possibly” reduce some Dev load. While also future proofing things.

        ?

I would guess you’re referencing Turtle WoW? But I have no sympathy for them. They did that to themselves. Blizzard left most private servers to themselves for over a decade. My first experience with Wow was a private server.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the content generally, not the company. Especially being part of pedosoft now. I mean, honestly that was kind of a lateral move considering Kotik. Or any of the other issues. But turtle in particular was egregious. They weren’t taking small donations in the kitty to help pay for hosting for a server for their friends. They were operating a cash shop and paying for developer’s and much more. Writing new lore and stories built off the back of blizzard’s content.

At some point you have to be like; shit, just create some new assets etc and tell your own story. Something that should be simpler than trying to keep reverse engineering someone else’s content. No one has a monopoly on dwarves, elves, humans, gnomes, litch, orc, trolls etc. They were running a business on blizzard’s own name while competing with them.

I don’t understand the point of remaking the client. anyone able to explain the benefits of this?

the server itself can and already has been done with Trinity or mangos. why is the client being redone now?

There’s something similar for Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. In their case it lets those games run on Linux without any other rain dancing needed. And both work very well, the last time I checked.

IIRC, they also disable or omit some or the telemetry and privacy-invasive stuff. (I mean, why not… if they get found, the full weight of the overpaid lawyers they sic on you will behave as if you did far worse).

No idea if this client does similar, though.

In addition to compatibility with the client machines, it ensures a client which can be made to interact with private servers without worrying about the copyright claims that results from using official clients with patches.

Having an open source client and open source servers could also be the start of fan content. Kind of like how Beyond All Reason completely recreated the Total Annihilation RTS and made it free and open source.

I’d love to see an indie group put together a WoW expansion.

Legitimately laughed at this. That’s how I will refer to such debugging antics in the future.

I’m guessing it makes the licensing less of a gray area.

You can’t redistribute blizzard’s game, so it makes patches harder to distribute. Some get around it by just distributing the patch, but it’s hard to find that specific version of WoW legally.

Make your own game client, and have people source their own data files.

You’re asking this question in the Linux Gaming community? How many native Linux ports have there been before?
