Centralized platforms have obvious and severe problems. Unfortunately, most people don’t care.
The tech press is nearly worthless as anything other than a press release service for big tech and the rich techbros who own it.
Any cool tech publication worth their salt would have been writing articles about how cool Mastodon is not trying to help out their buds at Bluesky cash in on their investment by casting shade for no reason on Mastodon.
Well, he got one thing right: “tooting” hasn’t taken off.
Is Mastodon still a thing? I haven’t heard from it in a while.
It probably has a user base an order of magnitude larger than Lemmy, so… Barely?
Yes?
Honestly… almost 10 years later most of those points are still pretty valid.
I agree with all but #2 (mostly because that defeats the entire purpose of a decentralized platform) and #4
But I also believe that it can’t go mainstream. If it did that would ruin what many went to these style platforms to avoid.
I believe the same thing with the Lemmy as well, if it became mainstream, it’ll just ruin what is already here.
I can’t say much on that though, since I was one of the “refugees” that came in around the time that the core ecosystem of lemmy started changing. So I’m sure some of the OG lemmy members feel the same about us.
Tell that to my beans and rice!
Surviving but not exactly thriving sadly.
I love the cross posts: 3 hours, 3 hours, 3 years.
I almost responded to the 3 year post, I had to do a doubletake.
The fewer people who know about Mastadon and Lemmy the better.
No
