Death penalty is inhumane, uncivilized, primitive, barbaric, and provably ineffective in reducing crime rates. We have countless of studies on this.

So while I agree with the underlying sentiment that corruption should be fought effectively, I would not go as far as to promote the death penalty.

I disagree completely. I would go a step further and include any corrupt authority figure, including police officers, judges etc. Way too many dirtbags getting away with this shit and worse.

Yes, getting away with it is obviously not what we want. But the death penalty doesn’t change anything about that.

Well you can sentence them to my basement. Then they are out of sight out of mind, just like you apparently want. Never mind what happens next or the giant hole in the middle of the basement. That is simply a defunct well. Definitely not full of corrupt carrion.

THERE were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.

Yes, some deaths are worse than others. No, that still doesn’t justify the death penalty in any way today.

when you only complain about one, and not the other, is exactly the point

Like when people want to complain about the savagery of killing the Romanovs . . . and ignore how many peasant girls died of starvation for each Fabrege egg . . .

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but sometimes the harm of keeping a person alive can outweigh the harm of killing them.

I politely disagree. This is truly a humanitarian viewpoint worthy of deliberation beyond what could be discussed in an online forum. Therefore no haste with this viewpoint. Perhaps a civilized discussion could be had without fleeing towards comforting conclusions and welcoming sideline discourse. I truly wish there weren’t a need. But for the love of Our Lord Almighty, may we be willing to listen and be as open minded & accepting with a sincerely open hearted view. However unfortunate, this resolution lay upon many/ and or some of us. I do believe that this scenario demands an appropriate and very pragmatic approach.
