I just thought it was funny that a band added it to their rider as a joke many decades later, and then was aghast when they realized they had contractually obligated someone to sit there and sort through their entire fish bowl. Like I said, every other venue they had been to simply ignored that line.
So, it was originally more than a joke.
More a heuristic to verify whether the venue manager had bothered to read and comply with the contract for a pyrotechnics heavy performance.
