I used to like Kevin Hart, I haven’t paid much attention to him lately. I suspect that’s why he wanted to do this show, to try to gain some relevancy again, and of course the money.
I didn’t watch, I only skimmed the linked article, but generally, I agree with him. He gave some apparently edgy comics a platform, and they said edgy things that not everyone would find funny. So what? Everyone got what they paid for. Don’t like their jokes, don’t watch the show. End of issue.

Kevin Hart is more than capable of creating an amazing roast without hiring known racists. I think the difference between Shane Gillis and the other comedian (whose name escapes me because he’s not good enough to be on my radar, except for when he says some shitty things) seems to me to be undeniably massive. Shane doesn’t come off as truly hateful, or racist, or misogynist, etc. Maybe I’m speaking from a white, straight, male comedy lovers’ biased perspective but Shane’s jokes feel like jokes where the truly hateful comedians’ “jokes” feel like character revelations.
I think there’s a place in comedy for roasts and I don’t think we need to platform the worst people to make them successful or entertaining.

As a guy from ourside US the whole roast thing is baffling to me I know is a culture thing but the Fat guy bombed like 10 jokes outright and the Rock coming to hit on his wife was more sad rather than funny. There where some good ones but well still the question that got lodged in my head is why the fuck the fixation with “anything goes comedy” why you have to let anyone pick onto your worst because is comedy? I tought I would see something like Smosh’s funerary roast but not even.
Roasts are intended to be good natured. Insults from friends who actually like you a lot. They aren’t meant to be taken seriously. And it’s done with the consent of the roastee. Not everyone has skin thick enough for it.

That’s basically what Kevin said, but the article is pointing out that he was executive producer and could have just not booked the racist Kill Tony guy, or set guardrails up before hand (which they do for roasts).
Why would you hire the guy who performed at a Trump rally where he called Puerto Rico an Island Of Garbage? Why would you ever give that guy a single dime or second of screen time in general, let alone on a show you are producing, featuring yourself, with you name on that, to be forever associated with you? Kevin didn’t say the words, and almost certainly didn’t personally approve the joke ahead of time, if only because that’s how roasts work. But he knew, or should have known, exactly who he booked and what that entailed.
You don’t get to say, “Yeah, I invited a controversial comedian whose primary claim to fame was performing at a rally for the far right candidate, now president, where he made blatant anti-immigrant and racist remarks about Latino, black and Jewish people, but how can I be held responsible when that guy said similar racist stuff at my event!?” Like inviting Jeffrey Dahmer to the potluck and being shocked at the dish he brings.
