I actually agree for the most part. There are endless places to buy PC games but Steam offers an experience that genuinely makes that experience better.
It’s not perfect and I don’t love everything Steam does, but it’s much better than Microsoft’s store or buying directly from each developer and getting a disorganized library. (Though, supporting indie devs directly is awesome.)
Steam not only makes the experience better for customers, but the 30% developers pay to be on steam provides such a massive return on investment for pretty much everyone that isnt releasing scam games or are idiots alienating their customer base.
and steam reinvests it in shit like proton, expanding markets and customer bases for everyone selling on steam without any work for them.
Theres an absolute lot you can validly go after steam for, and absolutely should… because no one should fanboy any company. Every company should be held to account.
But this monopoly shit? It just sounds like some pissant tiny dev trying to punch up to make a name for itself, since it cant do it via its games.
The main reason I am pretty much exclusively on steam now, is because every other fucking digital distribution platform I used shut down and I lost access to every fucking thing I bought with no refund or compensation… Just because steam survives and doesnt fuck me up the ass, doesnt mean its a monopoly. Steam isnt responsible for destroying its competition.

Steam also contributes back. They have basically single-handedly revolutionized gaming on linux, VR, and arm
If I weren’t buying games on steam I would be a dirty pirate. That’s their competition right now.
