Not scared enough
Not anywhere close.
Scared? They just tune the balance because they see that the currect level of investments won’t provide a nice ratio of profits. Scared… Scared of who?
Scared of the proletariat that will come for their heads. What is happening in the USA right now is the same as what caused The French Revolution and we all know how that turned out.
Scared of the proletariat that will come for their heads

I get how it feels that way, buy Americans have a LONG way to go before they know anything like that sort of poverty.
Depends where you are in America. Might be a rich country but there remains a lot of abject poverty.
Americans won’t get to that stage until they abandon electoralism and realize No Kings has been neutering their political outrage
The French nobles didn’t have private jets waiting to whisk them off to the far side of the planet.
Scared they’re totally leveraged and people will call their bluff before their super compute is built or the super compute will have diminished returns aka the investment is a wash. If this goes bust it will make the 2008 global financial crisis look cute.
They aren’t scared of shit. They aren’t even risking their own money on any of this shit.
Scared of losing some of their money
I love how all their proposed solutions are similarly disconnected from reality. Like “Let’s just give the poors a big break on income taxes”. Income taxes on lower-income families are already low, plus if nobody has a job in the AI dystopia then what do income taxes matter?
“Let’s make some consolations through the government, so they can pay for these things, with the money that we are avoiding paying in corporate taxes.”
If all this data center building and investment is a bust aka their next super model doesn’t deliver on all the promises they’ve made it’s going to make the 2008 financial crisis look cute.
Have any of their super models lived up to the hype?
Of course this one won’t either.
Yes and no. Some extremely impressive things have been accomplished already. Alpha fold was very successful just to name one smaller and older project. The recent proof of the planar unit distance problem is very notable. The list goes on and on. There’s some legitimate gold in those neural network hills, it’s just not consistent.

Actually now that it’s being brought up it would be interesting to see the allotment of funds and compute in relationship to types of neural nets. I really can’t confirm or deny what you are saying. That said different labs seem to have taken different approaches.

There’s also another option that none of them seem to be pushing: if AI is as disruptive as they say, there’s always the option to pull the plug. That they won’t even consider this choice suggests that their appeals to the toiling masses aren’t in good faith — which at this point should be obvious to just about everyone.
There’s still this other question: Who will it be who pulls these plugs?
If SCOTUS wasn’t complicit maybe they would find replacing human workers with AI illegal like China’s did.
I found an interesting summary of court cases regarding AI’s infringement of authors’/artists’ copywrite.
Only thing that scares them is the market crashing before they can cash out.
