I maintain that the people who didn’t like Academy didn’t understand it. The show had its bad episodes, but its entire core premise is basically a cross between “What does Star Trek mean to you?” and “Where do we as a franchise go from here?”

It wasn’t perfect, but some of those episodes are very TNG at heart.

    Edit:

…and then you have that very standard problem in Trek: the shows never really find their footing until the third season. That, combined with all of the money being poured into hating on it, makes me unsurprised it died early.

DS9 never would have made it to the actual Dominion War in this media climate. Every YouTube review would just be an overlay of lazy sound effects paired with teardowns of bad, or even just lukewarm, writing moments. Because the money is in making people hate things now. Because it’s easier and more profitable to bully a show for the members of the audience who didn’t feel one way or another than it is to praise a show for being brave and trying to find its voice.

Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t love Academy, but when I found something I did like and wanted to talk about it, I was shocked by the visceral hatred of almost all major communities, especially YouTube.
