    Why do we count the wider metro area? Is that not like counting the wider bay area for san francisco’s population? Looks like about 14 million in tokyo city proper. That’s like NYC (uh never mind I guess its 8.5 million)

      How to define a city is a huge thing, and there’s actually a laundry list of different techniques geographers can use.

      It’s a concentration of people, but settlement patterns vary, and the way they’re politically organised or locally referred to varies even more.

      What does it matter where we draw arbitrary lines? If we take Tampa Bay by its city limits, it’s a little town of no importance. Does that make sense though?
