  • Honestly, yea. Or a police officer in a bunch of gear. Or hell if it’s the states or Canada they don’t even need that much gear.

I know what a masked killer is planning to do and no one would be too upset with me for protecting myself.

If a cop shows up and starts to get pissy because I’m not making him feel like a good special wittle baby boy then I could end up seriously injured or dead while an astonishing number of people many of whom aren’t cops or related in any way to cops desperately try to make sure I’m blamed for the incident. And all that because they got the wrong address, didn’t announce themselves, and got mad when I asked them what the fuck they were doing in my fuckin’ house.

Oh, they could also just be a conservative, those dipshits and their worthless, proven-a-million-times-to-be-awful policies do way more damage than some amateur serial killer could ever hope for.

  • Also most people are kinda on auto-pilot/following the rails until they finish school(and that’s fine). Even the ones who did really crazy shit very likely had parental guidance which means it’s not your fault your parents didn’t craft you into a race car driver or whatever.

Once they really get out into the world they’re, what, 22-26? Older sometimes? We hit 30 and say “in 30 years I’ve done nothing” as if we had full agency and control for that entire time. You know how old the average person is when they’ve had twice the life experience of another average person who just turned 30? Probably around 40. That’s it, you’re good.

  • Which is part of why I brought up that it’s valuable as a lot of people here seem to have decided that it’s not. My main sentiment is that we hold it from a lot of people, and instead of going Star Trek future we’re careening towards Cyberpunk 2077 and there are morons who are genuinely excited about that.

Somebody once said that “dystopia is just taking current third world/minority situations and applying it to white people”. I’m bringing it up now because so much of the world currently lives without a lot of that technology simply because using it isn’t immediately profitable. Most* white people do have greater access to newer innovations and discoveries.

(The LLM advancement is that we’re getting closer to being able to use plain language to interface with technology but yea, sure, a couple lonely people can do that I guess and we’ll pretend that it doesn’t land in the dystopia category).

  • I’ll keep it short, you got a lot of replies already. A lot of the tech is actually quite valuable and a lot of the promises of people like Elon Musk are, for lack of a better term, nearly complete horseshit.

What I’m personally exhausted by is how we’re doing all this and yet we can’t seem to bring ourselves to use it to help anyone. It isn’t the tech or the pace of development rather it’s the fact that we’ll triple someone’s productivity while keeping a five-day work-week with eight-hour days despite a mountain of studies and real-world examples showing how that’s not beneficial for anyone. So much of the development is going towards making the worst people more money and I fucking hate it so much.

  • WHAT? Like, I know that the battle and stuff does happen after Smaug, so he’s not the final event of the book like you’d think, but I can’t imagine jumping into the third movie for a weirdly quick pay-off and then watching them drag out the battle for basically an entire movie.

God the more I know about these movies the happier I am in my choice to just cherish the book on its own.

  • Right? And moving in a truck sucks. A minivan or full-sized van are way better. My grandma used to have a GMC Safari and that shit was awesome for moving. It could actually take an amount of stuff, was clean inside, AND it could be used easily while it was raining(and locked).

Another old coworker had a racebike and he literally made parts for MotoGP race teams and he had a Mercedes Metris van. Nice and low and easy to get bikes in and out of. Two other coworkers went to the track once and sold their Mazda 3 hatch and whatever Sedan to buy F150s and it was so funny watching them try to get a Ninja 250 out of the super high bed one day.

And then another coworker at my last job was all proud of hauling some dirt but my dad’s STi can do that just fine so…

  • Well, carbs are ass but they had fuel-injected 6cyl Rangers and Mazda B2500s. Those were solid trucks and for jobs where having a bed you could just toss shit into is actually important they worked great. Plus you could reach into the bed unlike these new giant fucking things and that’s coming from a dude who’s 6’-5”.

The biggest thing is that if they actually had any braincells and truly bought the vehicle for practical reasons they’d probably all own GMC Savannas and stuff but it’s all about the image so…

  • “I’ll have you know that I use this truck once a year to pull something a sturdy station wagon could handle just fine! And what if you need a really shitty version of a U-Haul? Then who are you gunna call?!? I saved $200 moving that one time and all it cost me was an extra $35k and a gas bill with numbers mathematicians are still trying to describe properly.”

Trucks: If you don’t have a fifth wheel RV then you may just be a complete dipshit.
