So for those unaware, René Auberjonois filmed scenes as a Starfleet officer named West (who had an odd rank of Colonel). At the end of the movie it is revealed that West, disguised as a Klingon, had attempted to assassinate the Federation president. If you have no memory of this, then no worry. You’ve only seen the theatrical version. All the scenes which René appears were not included.

According to Memory Alpha, prior to 2009, the home media releases included the West scenes but did not list Colonel West or René Auberjonois in the credits. 2009 is when the first DVD release came out, being the theatrical cut. The page for West indicates the 4K remaster, released in 2022, includes West scenes but omitting the reveal of the assassin’s identity.

With multiple edits of The Undiscovered Country existing, what is considered the canonical version?

Who thought it is a good idea to let George Lucas edit Trek? It’s like an Odo shot first kind of situation. And I think Odo never used a phaser.

Is this is the guy that Scotty shoots in the end? If so, I’ve only ever seen the version with that scene and the bad Mission: Impossible face mask reveal. And I owned this movie as a VHS bought in Europe as part of a set released before VII came out…
