Windows 11 has given me no issues whatsoever. I’m not apologizing for having a great experience.

Different strokes for different folks - windows 11 does have it’s uses.

Ever since our office laptops “upgraded” they’ve made excellent space heaters during the winter. Open up Teams, a PowerPoint, and a YouTube video and you’ve got a nice toasty office!

I believe everyone has the right to choose whatever works for them. Linux does require you to work through issues at times. I do think people should be aware of Microsoft aiding in the genocide of Palestinians, however.

Honestly, I just wait until they ask me how to do something with copilot. I can talk to them for 10 minutes about all the different AI I can use, even openai before explaining that I don’t have to reconfigure office, SharePoint, or M365 to use something else, then I use the L word, and that is why Windows 11 or 12 upgrades disrupt nothing for me. No I didn’t have to buy new devices, no my phone works fine with what I have, yes, I can edit that type of file. No, I am not a hacker. Macs are fine, I just haven’t needed Apple to get a small fast laptop.

Yeah, and even if you’re using Arch BTW, you’re not using it correctly! Why would you install a fully featured DE? Don’t you know how many dependencies that introduces to your custom built super slick OS? Come on, just use I3! Writing basic functionallity like a shutdown menu yourself isn’t that bad!

Nah, The more you learn about mormonism the more you realize how stupid it is.

It’s more like vegans, the more you learn about it the more you realize they’re right but you don’t switch out of convenience and familiarity. The preachiness and eir of superiority is annoying though.

“If you don’t like Linux you’re just a troll” is the EXACT energy OP is talking about. Y’all are insufferable. Linus Torvalds is incredibly well known for being a dick because “what I think is right is most important” and that toxic attitude is what keeps most people from giving Linux a second look.

But totally, people hating on Linux are just trolls. Let me guess, you use Arch? You’re always the most obnoxious.

You know Linus acts like an ass, but Balmer is an ass, and Jobs was a horrible person?

And google is amoral in general.

I’d rather side with the rude for a reason crowd, then the polite to take advantage of you crowd.

That said I use linux for a long time now, and only recently would I recommend it to others. And even that not always.

Psh. In my experience, Linux users don’t beg people to change their OS. They just make fun of you and act like they’re somehow superior to you for the OS you use.

That’s the thing, many people don’t know there is anything else and don’t realize “their” machines have slowly slid out of order to the point of not “working” anymore.
When I don’t tell someone I know that using a computer does not have to be painful, it feels like an act of cruelty. That only applies to people I know IRL, I feel like most of Lemmy at least knows about Linux. In any case, if anything I’d say the tendency to mention Linux comes from a genuine intention of helping

Sure, if you’re in a space where people aren’t technologically proficient that’s fair. But this behavior is most prevalent here on lemmy, and i seriously doubt anyone who has managed to find their way to this platform doesn’t know that linux exists. It just becomes real insufferable real fast.

I went down the privacy rabbit hole, and I think it was bad for my mental health. I decided I don’t care, and what I really want is for technology to just not influence my decisions (e.g. ads influencing my purchasing decisions). Beyond that, I don’t care.

I mean I do care, but it’s overwhelming and ultimately the toll it takes on me isn’t worth it.

Graphene OS on your phone? Or a dumb phone?

        No internet connected TV device?

Modern cars also have an embedded sim card that’s reporting back data.

Any other “smart devices” in the house?

It’s possible, but difficult to avoid surveillance capitalism… Teach me how.

          Yup, graphene.

Nope, got a 2007ish 1080p lcd and a roku that’s never seen the internet. And one of those tiny CRT guys with the VCR built in, not bragging.

          2002, not mine.

Nope, purposefully avoid “smart.” It’s in fact the exact opposite of what it says and is an attack vector, as IoT garbage is never secure.

Still not 100% free since I use “any website,” but doing the best I can and don’t need to add “one of the most malevolent players in that game” to own my PC, I’ll own it myself thank you.

Instead of being condescending, you might help people solve the problems that keep them from switching. Or just stay quiet. Whatever you prefer. This elitist attitude is one of the reasons why some people won’t even try Linux because they fear they will be ridiculed as soon as they need to ask for help.

Have you seen how some Linux users treat people who don’t use exactly what they think is the hottest shit? Even towards people who use as much FOSS as they can but still need some proprietary stuff for certain use cases because FOSS alternatives are not quite there yet. It’s annoying as hell and comes up in every single discussion that vaguely fits the topic. I would say the comparison to Mormons is not that far off.

This feels like a fantasy you made up in your head. It’s not like you even need to ask anyone for help anyway. All the documentation is out there for almost anything you wanna do on Linux. There is nothing elite about it. Unless you use arch btw.

I’m all for moving as many people away from closed systems as possible. But tribalism and victim blaming achieves the exact opposite. Why would anyone move to something where the community makes them feel unwelcome from the start?

If we want people to use Linux, we have to be patient and help them overcome their pain points, not go “haha you dumb”.

There is nothing “elite” about Linux anymore, it’s an extremely accessible option and easier than windows in several ways. It’s not the 90s. I recently had to install windows on a separate SSD and I was shocked to find I had to manually find and install nearly every single driver. Like wtf, bazzite and Linux Mint does that shit for you
