I’m part of a union and I work 36 hours a week (and would like to go 32 once I have a bit more financial headroom). But 8 hours a day is pretty typical right? I don’t know anyone who works less than that. I use the hours I don’t have to work relative to a normal 40 hour workweek to take days off, not work less per day. On a 6 hour workday I’d probably be as productive as an 8 hour one, but that’s my employer’s problem and not mine.

Depends how many days a week that you work. 8 hr days x 5 days is 40 hours. So if you’re working 36 hours a week, and 5 days, then you’re already working less than 8 hour days.

Though I’d guess you’re likely 9x4. My place of work, for people who do 5 day weeks, its 7hr days (including 30 min paid lunch and two 15 min paid breaks).

No I work 8 hour days, I just have every 2nd Friday off. Though those 8 hour days do include random coffee breaks etc, as is probably normal in office spaces. Not lunch tho, so I tend to work from 8:30 - 17:30 with 1 hour lunch break.

Work culture in around the world is fucked. We all know we’re essentially pushing a rock from one side of the room to the other, all so some guy can have multiple homes and a private sexual abuse island. That Guys best friend also gets to be president, while I have to make a schedule to show my bosses work is being done… Like what? Can’t I just do the work and you verify with your own two eyes? No, if it’s not on the schedule that some middle manager only sees but never verifies if it got done, it’s the same as not doing it.

Yup. At my job it’s fairly common for annoying “urgent” requests to come in late afternoon on Fridays. Often from some of the upper management folks who do very little work. They finally realize “whoops, the weekend is almost here!” They suddenly want to check a box somewhere to make it look like they actually did something this week. And, of course, the requests are always a hand-off to someone in my department to do the actual work (which the requestor will take full credit for after we close the ticket).

Interviews are two way. Prioritise finding a good boss, it really helps when it turns out the wider work environment is shit
