Because they hand patents out for anything especially under the Trump patent office. If I remember correctly they don’t do any prior art review any more. You practically just have to apply for a patent. They’re cutting reviewers and it’s going to cost billions in lawsuits to undo the patents they should never have handed out.

We all hate Trump but I’m pretty sure tech industry patents have been fucked for a while.

Like… Apple and Samsung sued each other over rounded corners nearly 10 years ago.

The system has been and remains broken was the point I was trying to make with my rhetorical question.

So they’re using the voices of voice actors without paying the voice actors. Hooray.

letting an AI take over your game to help you if you’re stuck. Patent documents filed by Sony show plans to offer an in-game “AI Ghost” that can demonstrate how to progress further, or alternatively have your control fully taken over by the AI in order to make progress for you.

    ew.

I sometimes remember that there’s gamers out there who have disabilities…

And then I remember my friend who has to use a mouth controller to play games, and I’m certain they wouldn’t want this shit anywhere near them. What a demoralizing feeling to have a computer play the game for you. Yuck.

Idk, I’ve left some games behind, which I could have played many more hours, just because I didn’t have the patience to get past a level/battle/boss, whatever. Not so much as a teenager, but definitely as an adult.

Sometimes I come back after weeks or months, sometimes I don’t bother.

I appreciate your feelings, but I need to point out that you don’t actually know that you would have continued playing that game. Let’s say you had this tool to help you clear a boss (and we’re being very generous in assuming it can). Most games ramp up in difficulty, and many bosses or hurdles act as skill checks. What do you suppose would happen when you got to the next difficult spot? It almost certainly wouldn’t be easier than before.

I get that there’s difficult games out there that are hard for the sake of being hard (Fromsoft has some of the most egregious examples), but that might just be a sign that those games aren’t actually your cup of tea, and that’s okay, even if it’s from a flaw in the game design. If you’re not having fun with a game anymore, you should give yourself permission to walk away.

If you drop a game for any reason, you are never required to pick it back up, and this idea that we all need to “work through our backlog” is making what’s supposed to be a fun hobby into a chore.

yes, that’s kind of my point. With this feature it’d be more likely that I would. I don’t play games for the boss fights, but even story-driven ones have them at times. They’re more of a nuisance to me.

At that point a cheat code to enable godmode achieves the same purpose and still gives you player agency, unlike an AI taking over. Or just an accessibility option to skip boss fights. We really don’t need to reinvent the wheel here with AI.

Sony locking the technology that removes the fun part of a game from the game behind the 1,000 year IP door is an accidental blessing.

They want to set a precedent of using recordings from voice actors to generate new content. They move the bar a little at a time until the worst is normalized.

Wow dat shit is both cursed and insulting to voice actors as well as gamers.

“Too stupid to progress in the game and look for tips online? Let our voice-stealing AI play the game for you while you go back to work, you stupid slave.”

I was just thinking that one person I’ve met is an incredibly gifted actor, including voice acting. There are a few records floating around having heard which no man wants to live. I haven’t had a chance to listen to them in full, patiently and for a few times, but I hope some day I will.

So-o … I don’t think this is something that can be done properly by a machine. Not yet. Too much context and nuance. And also I’m not sure this is legal. I don’t think those actors consented to any other derivative works other than the original games.
