I have a large kitchen aid stand mixer, and I love it… But sometimes i want a small mixer where i do not have to lift the 500 pound beast onto the counter.
Something this style:

My wife worked at a higher end kitchen store for a long time, and got to test out a whole lot of different brands of kitchen gadgets and such, and made really good use of her employee discount
In the end, her recommendation is to basically go with Breville for everything but stand mixers (go with KitchenAid) and blenders (go Vitamix)
So we have a Breville hand mixer. This was actually one of the last things she picked up before leaving that job, and it was at my request, she kind of didn’t see the point of it since we already had the stand mixer, and an immersion blender, and honestly just about everything else you could want, but now that we’ve had it I’ve made a convert of her. It gets regular use and abuse and it’s still going strong probably almost a decade later
It’s got a light that shines into the bowl, which doesn’t seem like it should be a big deal but it’s actually really nice to have, it’s got plenty of power but is also probably the quietest mixer I’ve ever used, it comes with the usual beaters, whisks, and dough hooks, and its got a little storage container in clips onto so that the attachments are always there with it and you don’t have to go looking through your drawers for them when you need them.
The silicone on my beaters is starting to look a little worse for wear, but I don’t think that’s unreasonable given how long we’ve had it, and I’m pretty sure I can order new ones from Breville still if I wanted to.
I was looking at brevile mixers, but so many reviews I have read complain about the beaters being garbage. Between the silicone coming off in pieces to the beaters falling apart.
I got a Braun HM5100 six or so years ago. Use it at least twice monthly and it’s still as good as the day I bought it. It’s variable speed on a dial, not a switch, so you can bring up or down the speed with much more control.
I have a KitchenAid hand mixer that’s been fine. If you’re happy with your KitchenAid stand mixer, seems that it might be reasonable to get the hand mixer version. I mean, you’ve already got a picture of one posted.
Note that I’m assuming that “variable speed” here translates to “discrete number of speeds in a given set of increments”, and not some “continuous-variable speed where you can just move a slider” thing.
The last one I had I found in a thrift store.
Avocado green, 70s styling, would work forever.I probably would still have it if I lived in the US.
I had a harvest gold thrift shop mixer that I loved until the spoon incident… it burned out the motor, or screwed to the gears. It never was quite the same after that.
A Bamix is bifl.
While I’m sure their quality is there, an immersion blender isn’t what op is after. Even if it comes with a whisk attachment, the hand mixer uses interfering counter rotating sturdy attachments that can handle more solid things like boiled potatoes, which a whisk or immersion blender would be fairly useless for.
